CloudJet4BigData: Streamlining Big Data via an Accelerated Socket Interface

    Get PDF
Big data needs to feed users with fresh processing results and cloud platforms can be used to speed up big data applications. This paper describes a new data communication protocol (CloudJet) for long distance and large volume big data accessing operations to alleviate the large latencies encountered in sharing big data resources in the clouds. It encapsulates a dynamic multi-stream/multi-path engine at the socket level, which conforms to Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) and thereby can accelerate any POSIX-compatible applications across IP based networks. It was demonstrated that CloudJet accelerates typical big data applications such as very large database (VLDB), data mining, media streaming and office applications by up to tenfold in real-world tests

A Novel Model of Atherosclerosis in Rabbits Using Injury to Arterial Walls Induced by Ferric Chloride as Evaluated by Optical Coherence Tomography as well as Intravascular Ultrasound and Histology

This study aim was to develop a new model of atherosclerosis by FeCl3-induced injury to right common carotid arteries (CCAs) of rabbits. Right CCAs were induced in male New Zealand White rabbits (n = 15) by combination of a cholesterol-rich diet and FeCl3-induced injury to arterial walls. The right and left CCAs were evaluated by histology and in vivo intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) examinations of 24 hours (n = 3), 8 weeks (n = 6), and 12 weeks (n = 6) after injury. Each right CCA of the rabbits showed extensive white-yellow plaques. At eight and 12 weeks after injury, IVUS, OCT, and histological findings demonstrated that the right CCAs had evident eccentric plaques. Six plaques (50%) with evident positive remodeling were observed. Marked progression was clearly observed in the same plaque at 12 weeks after injury when it underwent repeat OCT and IVUS. We demonstrated, for the first time, a novel model of atherosclerosis induced by FeCl3. The model is simple, fast, inexpensive, and reproducible and has a high success rate. The eccentric plaques and remodeling of plaques were common in this model. We successfully carried out IVUS and OCT examinations twice in the same lesion within a relatively long period of time

    High-energy, alignment-insensitive, injection-seeded Q-switched Ho:yttrium aluminum garnet single-frequency laser

    Get PDF
A high-energy, alignment-insensitive, injection-seeded Q-switched Ho:yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) single-frequency laser is developed. Both the slave Q-switched laser and the seed laser are Ho:YAG ring lasers based on a pair of corner cubic reflectors. The seed laser has an available power of 830 mW at 2096.667 nm. At 100 Hz, the Q-switched Ho:YAG laser provides a single-frequency pulsed output using injection-seeded technology. The 7.3 mJ single-frequency pulse energy from the slave laser has a pulse width of 161.2 ns and is scaled to 33.3 mJ after passing through the Ho:YAG single-pass amplifier. According to the measurement results of the heterodyne beating technique, the single-frequency pulse has a half-width of 4.12 MHz

Destined to fail or something to grow on? Examining the relationship between implicit theories of relationships and perceptions of other's romantic relationships

    Get PDF
The present study examined whether an individual’s own implicit theory of relationships predicts how s/he perceives his/her friend’s romantic relationship. Implicit theories of relationships are based on destiny beliefs (DB), the belief that a relationship is meant to be, and growth beliefs (GB), the belief that relationships require work. Each participant was randomly exposed to one of three relationship scenarios where the participant’s hypothetical friend discusses a partner displaying negative, mixed, or positive relationship behaviors. We found the participants high in DB were less approving of the relationship, and those high in GB were more approving. Those high in DB also made more relationship-damaging attributions when asked to select reasons why the partner engaged in said behaviors but surprisingly perceived the couple as more satisfied overall. Anticipated interactions between DB and GB were not found

Customers Perceptions of Staying at a Lifestyle hotel

The purpose of this research was to understand Chinese customers’ views on the lifestyle hotel industry. The study objectives were to a) investigate reasons people stay in lifestyle hotels, b) what customers expect from lifestyle hotels, and c) inspire managers to improve their business model to give customers a better experience. 115 respondents participated in the survey who had stayed at lifestyle hotels. The study found that people stay at lifestyle hotels because they provide a welcoming environment and offer plenty of entertainment. Customers indicated that they would like the hotels to provide more family activities to enhance the quality of their stay. It was also found that managers need to provide highly personalized services to enhance the brand image, which in turn increases the uniqueness of the hotel and attracts customers

Delayed switching in memristors and memristive systems

    Get PDF
It was found that the switching in a memristor takes place with a time delay (this peculiar feature is named “the delayed switching”). This feature has been verified by a circuit-based experiment. The physical interpretation of this phenomenon is that an electron element possesses certain inertia, i.e., charge qq or flux varphivarphi is inertial with the tendency to remain unchanged (settle to some equilibrium state). It cannot respond as rapidly as the fast variation in the excitation waveform and always takes a finite but small time interval to change its resistance value, as it must take place in a memristor or memristive system. In addition, a potential application of using this feature in ultradense computer memory has been discussed.Peer reviewe
